Southwest Virginia Rush

Rush Academy (9U-10U)

2020-2021 Seasonal Birth Years: 2011, 2012

Due to pandemic related challenges and restrictions and to give the developmental division time to implement a responsible phased return to play plan, Rush Youth Academy will not be offered during the Fall 2020 cycle. Please register for our community-based, affordable, and flexible Developmental League instead. We're hoping to build enough momentum and interest during fall 2020 to offer Youth Academy again in Spring 2021.

The youth academy program targets children ages 9-11 in the training to learn stage, also referred to as the “golden age of learning." For players who have developed a solid foundation in FMS and basic soccer skills, play at this level begins to look and feel like the traditional soccer played by older youth. Academy is the final step in the SWVA Rush pathway before players join more competition-oriented pathways. Technical development remains a major focus with increased emphasis on proper technique. Simple tactics are introduced as players learn to play in groups and tactical units. Lastly, the academy program focuses on developing great behaviors and character. Early sports success is most often the result of relative age effect and children simply being bigger, stronger, and faster at a young age. The academy program develops the player behaviors and habits that are a better performance predictor for the teenage years and beyond.

Rush Academy is a year long, developmental program offered as an alternative to recreational teams. While players may enroll in both simultaneously, this is not recommended as potential for burnout, fatigue, and overuse injuries would be heightened. The program is designed for players seeking a higher level of training and coaching than recreational programs traditionally offer. It creates a high quality developmental environment pairing more frequent training with regular weekend “friendly” festivals. Players train as a co-ed pool ranging in size from 12-24 children. Player pools and can be grouped by geography, chronological age, and/or developmental level. Pools come together 3 times per month for intra club academy festivals or jamborees.
